Women Who Build Africa is set to Invest in 10 Early-stage African Female Founders

The first-ever WWBA Assembly will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, on September 13–14.

Women Who Build Africa (WWBA), a community established to bring together and support women working in tech across Africa, has issued an open call for women founders, investors, and ecosystem partners to express interest in attending.

The accelerator, which is sponsored by organizations like Founders Factory Africa, Enza Capital, Open Capital, NEXT176, One Day Yes, Untapped Global, A&A Collective, WomHub, Amazon Web Services, and others, is offering ten founders the chance to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, completely free of charge, to attend the Assembly, pitch to a group of the area’s top investors, and network with ecosystem partners.

According to Gwera Kiwana, co-founder of Women Who Build Africa. “We are appreciative to our partners for collaborating with us to make this event possible, and we see it as a foundation for what is possible in the future. We warmly invite entrepreneurs, financiers, and ecosystem partners that help women entrepreneurs to demonstrate significant support for promoting inclusive growth.

Ten early-stage female founders from across the continent will present their pitches at the WWBA Assembly, which will also feature interesting panels, seminars, and speeches for participants. To enhance networking in a casual setting, each day will end with social activities like happy hours and dinners.

Thea and Kiwana founded WWBA after realizing the need for specialized programs and assistance created especially for women in tech across stages on the continent, as well as for additional opportunities for underrepresented builders in this field to meet and communicate.

A varied group of investor partners will choose the startups that will participate in the pitch from the pool of applicants. Prior making their pitch, selected founders will be paired with mentors from the WWBA community. Other founders, operators, investors, and other members of the WWBA community are welcome to attend the event. We welcome allies.

The schedule will feature panel discussions and networking happy hours on women in venture capital, moderated by A&A Collective and Dream VC, pitches from 10 early-stage startups, a full day of workshops, speeches by later-stage founders, and more.

Applications can be submitted up to August 14th, 2023. Pre-Series A startups that wish to participate in the pitch must have at least one active female or non-binary founder. Later-stage founders and additional businesses will be invited. Anyone who would like to participate may do so here.

Women Who Build Africa (WWBA), a group founded in May 2022 by Thea Sokolowski (Stitch) and Gwera Kiwana (MFS Africa), has more than 600 members throughout Africa and has conducted events in Nairobi, Cape Town, Accra, and London.
