Samsung Launches Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Fold8 in Nigeria, Pushes Foldables Further Into the Mainstream
Samsung Electronics West Africa has opened pre-orders in Nigeria for its newest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, marking the company’s most ambitious push yet to move foldable devices from a niche category into everyday use.
The launch, announced today in Lagos, introduces two distinct devices built on seven generations of foldable design. Where earlier Z Fold models targeted a single type of user, Samsung is now splitting the line in two: the Fold8 is aimed at people who consume a lot of content, while the Fold8 Ultra chases the productivity and creator crowd. A third device, the Galaxy Z Flip8, launched globally alongside the Fold series but will not be sold in Nigeria.
A lighter, more versatile Fold8
The standard Fold8 is Samsung’s lightest Z Fold yet at 201 grams, a notable drop for a device that still packs a 7.6-inch main display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. Samsung says the weight reduction comes without sacrificing battery life, thanks to a 4,800mAh cell paired with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset built for Galaxy devices.
The bigger story is how the screen adapts to what people are doing with it. Folded shut, the cover display uses a 10:16 ratio suited to quick tasks like messaging and scrolling short-form video. Unfolded, the main screen shifts to 4:3, giving games and films more room to breathe, and the same ratio works well for reading when the phone is rotated. Samsung is betting that this flexibility, rather than raw specs, is what will pull more buyers toward foldables.

On the camera side, the Fold8 carries dual 50-megapixel sensors covering wide and ultra-wide shots, alongside a Dual Recording mode that captures both sides of a scene at once—useful for creators filming reactions or interviews. A feature called My FanCam automatically tracks a subject and reframes footage into vertical, social-ready clips without manual editing.
Fold8 Ultra targets creators and power users
The Ultra model pushes further on both design and hardware. At 4.1mm unfolded and 215 grams, Samsung calls it its slimmest Z Fold yet, built around an 8-inch main display for multitasking. Both new phones use what Samsung calls Flex Titanium, a titanium-based structure intended to keep the hinge thinner while cutting down on the crease that has long been a foldable phone complaint, alongside a screen rated at up to 3,000 nits for outdoor visibility.
The Fold8 Ultra’s headline upgrade is its camera system: a 200-megapixel main sensor now capable of HDR capture even at full resolution, joined by a new 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens. For video, it supports 8K recording through Samsung’s APV codec and adds Cine LUT for colour grading on the device itself, features clearly aimed at mobile creators who currently rely on separate editing software. A larger 5,000mAh battery and a new dual-path 45W charging setup round out the productivity pitch, backed by an expanded cooling system for sustained workloads.
Galaxy AI expands, with an eye on privacy
Both devices ship with One UI 9 and a broader set of Galaxy AI tools. Now Brief delivers personalised daily updates and now flags security risks alongside routine information, while Now Nudge tries to turn conversations into action—suggesting a calendar check or a saved location when it detects plans forming. Samsung has also deepened its partnership with Google, building in Gemini Intelligence for cross-app automation across more than 40 services, from checking flight tickets to booking a table, plus a Gemini Notebook feature for organising notes, files and recordings in one place.
Samsung is pairing the AI push with new privacy controls, including a One UI 9 dashboard that shows users what AI automations have been running on their behalf, and expanded Privacy Alerts that flag apps attempting to access background permissions. These sit alongside Samsung Knox and a newer Personal Data Engine designed to keep on-device AI processing contained and encrypted.
Pricing, availability and the switching pitch
Pre-orders for both phones are open in Nigeria now, in Graphite and Cream, with Violet Shadow exclusive to the Ultra and Lavender exclusive to the standard Fold8. Samsung is sweetening the launch with a six-month trial of Google AI Pro, which includes 5TB of cloud storage, and is leaning on an upgraded Smart Switch tool to court iPhone users—letting them scan a QR code to transfer data, including passwords, passkeys and eSIM information, without installing a separate app. Quick Share now also works directly with Apple’s AirDrop.
Buyers can add Samsung Care+ for accidental damage cover and extended warranty support, with the first three months free for anyone who buys through Samsung.com and enrols in a monthly plan.
