Kenyan Government Announces new Digital Number Plates
At the start of the year, the government and its agencies, most notably the NTSA, announced the release of new digital number plates for vehicles.
Following the launch of the plates by outgoing Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, the day has finally arrived.
The plates have two notable improvements: first, they now have security features that allow law enforcement agencies to track vehicles. The feature is essentially a microchip that security agencies can read remotely. Second, the plates have visually appealing fonts and designs.
Additionally, the plates now include a QR code, the Kenyan flag, and an NTSA serial number.
This development follows compliance with the Traffic Act of 2016, which includes a provision allowing security agencies to track vehicles suspected of being involved in a crime or illegal activity.
In addition, the new plates will be installed on all imported vehicles at the point of entry. The same exercise will include direct synchronization with the tax authority KRA. This, according to the agency, will aid in the tracking of tax evaders, including businesses that sell vehicles.
Kenya currently has nearly 5 million vehicles. These vehicles have an 18-month window in which to switch from their current plates to new ones. Each plate will set you back KES 3000.
The plates will also be used for 12 different types of vehicles.
