Google Photos: AI-Powered Editing Tools Magic Eraser, Magic Editor, and More Will Be Available for All Users.
In a significant step, Google on Wednesday allowed all users of iOS and Android to access the artificial intelligence (AI) editing features on its Google Photos app. This covers the Pixel 7 series’ Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait lighting capabilities. Additionally, the Magic Editor tool, which was introduced with the Pixel 8 series, will be available to non-Pixel users with limited usage. Notably, this week has seen a number of significant announcements from the software giant, including the addition of a new app to Workspace and the release of Gemini 1.5 Pro for public preview.
“Starting on May 15, many of our AI-powered editing tools — like Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait light — will be available to anyone using Google Photos, no subscription required,” stated Dina Berrada, Director of Product Management, Google Photos. Additionally, similar functionalities will be available on a wider range of devices, such as Pixel tablets.
The Magic Eraser function is comparable to Samsung’s Object Eraser and Oppo’s AI Erase. The AI intelligently eliminates background objects from photos when a user circles them, leaving the background elements intact. Google claims that Photo Unblur use facial recognition and machine learning to sharpen out-of-focus photos and bring out the details in faces.
The location of the light source in a photograph including fewer than four individuals can be altered by using portrait lighting. A slider allows users to adjust the light’s intensity as well. Every iOS and Android user will be able to use all three of these services for free.
The Magic Editor is another AI editing tool that is being developed. It combines basic gesture-based motions with generative AI to create intricate photo alterations. It is capable of carrying out various activities including shifting the background and moving objects.
After May 15, the feature—which is presently exclusive to the Pixel 8 series—will be accessible on all Pixel smartphones. Users of iOS and Android will also be able to use the functionality to make up to 10 modifications per month. Users must have a Premium Google One plan in order to use the feature after this.
Remarkably, the capabilities will be accessible to users of Google Photos on May 15, the day following Google I/O 2024, the company’s yearly developer-focused conference. During the event, it is anticipated that the tech giant will launch Android 15, which may include new AI features.
