Nigerian Edtech Startup, uLesson Announces an Open University Offering Tech-related Undergraduate Courses
With the establishment of Miva Open University, the Nigerian edtech startup uLesson, which offers online K–12 education across Africa, is moving into postsecondary education.
The pan-African distance learning university will be a degree-granting institution with full licensing, offering undergraduate courses in software engineering, cyber security, data science, and computing. Moreover, it will contain a school of management and social science offering degrees in public administration, economics, accounting, and management of businesses.
Little over a week ago, uLesson announced that it was ending its 1:1 private coding teaching sessions for kids. This is the second time the business has scaled back its DevKids program.
Sim Shagaya, the creator of uLesson, stated that the institution’s mission was to “offer accessible, high-quality education that supports our students’ success in the digital marketplace.” The organization is looking for a variety of positions and intends to use “passionate people” to change the tertiary education landscape.
With the introduction of Miva Open University, uLesson will face competition from companies like AltSchool Africa, an edtech company based in Nigeria that offers certifications in software engineering, product development, and data analytics for a year-long program that includes an internship.
