From Childhood Games to Guarding Africa’s Digital Frontlines: Inside Ali Sagiru’s NUR Sentinel AI
Long before Ali Sagiru thought about cybersecurity, he was a primary school kid fascinated by video games, imagining he’d build one of his own someday. He didn’t yet understand how software worked, but the curiosity never left him. Years later, that same curiosity has grown into Khaleepah Innovation Ecosystem, an Abuja-based venture built around practical AI and digital solutions for African users, and its flagship product: NUR Sentinel AI, a cybersecurity and threat-intelligence tool designed to help organizations detect, understand and respond to suspicious digital activity before it becomes a crisis.
Techtrends Africa spoke with Sagiru about the journey from a curious child to an early-stage founder building in one of tech’s most demanding fields, how NUR Sentinel AI actually works, the resource constraints that come with building cybersecurity products in Africa, and why he’d rather stay honest about where the platform is than overstate its progress.
Techtrends Africa: What inspired you to create this innovation?
Ali Sagiru: My interest in technology started when I was around primary school age. I was fascinated by games, and whenever I played them, I often imagined creating my own game one day. At that time, I did not understand how technology or software was built, but the curiosity stayed with me as I grew older. That curiosity eventually developed into a deeper interest in technology and AI, which led me to start building digital solutions and ultimately establish Khaleepah Innovation Ecosystem.
As our digital world continues to grow, I also became increasingly interested in the need to protect people, organisations and digital systems. This led to the development of NUR Sentinel AI, our current flagship cybersecurity and threat-intelligence innovation.
Techtrends Africa: What key challenge are you addressing, and who benefits most from it?
Ali Sagiru: We are addressing the growing challenge of understanding and responding to suspicious digital activity in an increasingly connected environment. NUR Sentinel AI is being developed to make cybersecurity information easier to understand and act upon, particularly for organisations and teams that need practical tools for detecting, analysing and responding to potential threats.
Our broader ecosystem also focuses on making useful digital and AI solutions more accessible to African users, particularly young people, students, small businesses and underserved communities.
Techtrends Africa: Walk us through how it actually works.
Ali Sagiru: NUR Sentinel AI is built around a simple approach: Detect, Understand, Act. It can analyse simulated suspicious messages, links and activities, identify potential risk patterns, categorise the level of risk, generate alerts and organise information for incident analysis and reporting.

The goal is not simply to show technical information, but to help users understand what a potential threat means and what defensive action may be appropriate. The platform is currently in an early development and validation stage, where we are continuously testing and improving its capabilities.
Techtrends Africa: What’s been your biggest challenge building and scaling in Africa?
Ali Sagiru: One of our biggest challenges has been building with limited resources while trying to access the technical expertise, infrastructure, mentorship and opportunities required to develop and validate a cybersecurity product. As an early-stage founder, much of the journey has involved self-learning, experimentation, problem-solving and continuous iteration.
Access to the right partnerships and real-world testing opportunities is also important because cybersecurity solutions need to be developed responsibly and validated against practical needs.
Techtrends Africa: How is NUR Sentinel AI making a tangible difference right now?
Ali Sagiru: We are still at an early stage, so I prefer to be transparent rather than claim large-scale impact that we have not yet measured. Our current focus is on building, testing and validating NUR Sentinel AI as a practical cybersecurity solution. Its value is centred on improving the way suspicious activity can be detected, understood, prioritised and documented. We are working toward stronger validation, real-world testing and measurable impact as the platform develops.
Techtrends Africa: What are your next goals and areas of focus?
Ali Sagiru: Our immediate focus is to continue improving and validating NUR Sentinel AI, strengthen its cybersecurity capabilities, expand testing and establish strategic partnerships that can support responsible development and real-world validation. We are also continuing to develop the wider Khaleepah Innovation Ecosystem around practical AI and digital solutions, with accessibility and African languages remaining important parts of our long-term direction.
Techtrends Africa: What trends do you see shaping this sector across Africa in the coming years?
Ali Sagiru: AI is increasingly becoming part of cybersecurity, including threat detection, security analysis, automation and risk management. At the same time, Africa’s rapid digital growth is increasing the importance of protecting people, businesses and institutions from digital threats.
I also believe that African technology solutions need to reflect local realities, languages and user behaviour. The future will require a combination of AI capabilities, human expertise, responsible development and solutions designed around the actual needs of African users.
Techtrends Africa: What advice would you give to upcoming innovators?
Ali Sagiru: Start with a real problem and learn continuously. You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. AI and no-code tools are making it easier for people with ideas to create and test prototypes, but they do not replace learning, responsibility or the need to understand what you are building.
Start small, build honestly, test your ideas, listen to users and improve step by step. Most importantly, do not exaggerate your progress. Let the work and evidence speak for you.
Techtrends Africa: For investors and organisations reading this, how can they support or connect with you?
Ali Sagiru: We are open to strategic partnerships with investors, government institutions, technology organisations, universities, cybersecurity professionals and other organisations interested in supporting African innovation. At our current stage, valuable support includes technical mentorship, cybersecurity expertise, infrastructure, research collaboration, real-world testing, product validation and strategic investment.
Our goal is to move NUR Sentinel AI from early-stage development toward stronger validation and practical use while continuing to build a sustainable African technology ecosystem.
