App for Ugandan moto-taxi With the addition of several new services to its offering, SafeBoda has become the latest startup in the African mobility space to transition toward becoming a multi-purpose “super app.”
SafeBoda, which began in Kampala, connects passengers with motorcycle taxi drivers while also providing additional financial services.
In 2018, the startup expanded to Kenya, and it has since raised a Series B funding round and begun operations in Nigeria. It left Kenya in 2020, citing the impact of COVID-19, but has been expanding its product since receiving funding from Google last year.

The startup stated that it was on its way to becoming a super app, providing Ugandans with a one-stop shop for all of their daily needs. The app, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or the App Store, now allows users to do no less than ten different things, with SafeBoda following in the footsteps of Gokada, Gozem, and temtem in expanding its offering beyond a simple on-demand taxi app.
Users can now use the app to send money for free to their contacts and other app users, as well as withdraw money from their nearest agent. They can also earn a 10% annual interest rate on the money in their wallet.
SafeBoda also allows users to purchase airtime and earn cashback, as well as purchase discounted fuel. The startup has also partnered with a number of major retailers, bars, and restaurants to enable users to pay in-store using the SafeBoda app. It also has a restaurant section where users can order food and have it delivered to their door.

Users can now use SafeBoda to pay for utilities such as cable TV, electricity, and water.
