Afya Rekod, a Kenyan e-health startup, has raised a $2 million seed round
Afya Rekod, a Kenyan e-health startup, has closed a US$2 million seed round to help it scale across the continent.
Afya Rekod, which will be launched in April 2020, is a health data platform that allows both patients and health facilities to capture, store, and access the mobility of patients’ health data. In five countries, the startup has over 150,000 users.
The platform offers numerous functionalities for providers, including hospital management, patient management, knowledge management, and inventory management. For patients, the platform allows for the recording of health data as well as access to medical intervention. It also compiles information on pharmacies and other important resources for easy access.
The $2 million seed round was led by US venture capital firm Mac Venture Capital, with Next Chymia among the other participants. The investment, according to Afya Rekod founder John Kamara, will help the startup expand into other African markets and accelerate the launch of its patient portal.
“This will provide patients with resources and tools for storing and managing their health data, which is a critical function for patients with chronic illnesses and their doctors,” Kamara explained.
“We’ve spent the last year and a half solely focused on developing a dynamic platform that streamlines health records with analytics and provides access to specialized clinics and experts.” This provides high-quality healthcare in an urgently needed manner. We are very excited about this investment because it will help us grow in key markets on our way to becoming the world’s leading patient mobility focused health platform. Our mission is to empower patients by providing them with access to their health data and connecting them with the health ecosystem, which includes hospitals, pharmacies, insurance, and other providers.”
Marlon Nichols, founding managing partner of MaC Venture Capital, stated that his firm admires Afya Rekod’s commitment to patient-centered health innovation and how it addresses current healthcare issues.
“The pandemic has pushed the clock forward, putting a premium on health data accessibility and analytics.” This is a global issue that can be addressed by forward-thinking private companies like Afya Rekod. “We’re excited to work with the team to tackle this difficult healthcare problem,” he said.
