Kenya Power to Roll out its Fixed Internet Services Come June 2023
Kenya Power, a government-owned provider of energy, announced in March that it would begin offering fixed internet. As of the right moment, it has declared that its service would debut in June 2023.
Business Daily reports that over the past few months, the state-owned electricity business has conducted pilot tests by offering the services to a handful of its clients.
Geoffrey Muli, the acting MD of Kenya Power, stated that the utility will begin offering the service by the end of this year.
Our goal is to start our Lit Fibre business this fiscal year, according to Muli.
Safaricom and other Internet service providers will be challenged by Kenya Power. With a market share of 37%, Safaricom now holds the most sway in the nation when it comes to fixed internet services. According to data from the Communications Authority of Kenya, which Business Daily reports, Wananchi is the second-place finisher with 29.2 percent (CA).
Internet service providers have been renting fiber-optic cables connected to its transmission lines from the state-owned electric company. According to Business Daily, Kenya Power and Safaricom agreed to a 20-year lease worth Sh421 million ($3.6 million) for the use of two fiber optic lines in 2010.
The business also wants to start providing internet services directly to homes, particularly those in rural areas.
