8 African Hardware Startups Advance in ASME’s 2026 Innovation Showcase
Eight ventures from across Africa have made it through to the regional finals of the 2026 ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW), a hardware-focused accelerator run by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers that has, over more than a decade, backed hundreds of physical-product startups tackling quality-of-life problems in underserved markets.
The African cohort emerged from a review process that ran between July 6 and August 6, during which founders pitched their products and worked through detailed engineering assessments with ASME’s panel of technical experts. They now sit alongside eight ventures from the Americas as part of a 16-strong shortlist competing for six places in this year’s global ISHOW cohort. A third regional round, in Chennai, will close out the selection process in early September.
Who made the cut
Kenya supplied three of the eight African finalists, all based in Nairobi. Ecomobilus Technologies is showing off e-Mkoko, a solar-powered electric handcart built for informal traders who currently move goods manually — a small but potentially significant efficiency gain for last-mile commerce. KilimoChills Solution is targeting a different bottleneck: post-harvest food loss, through a modular, solar-powered cold room aimed at small vendors who lack reliable grid power. Orienta rounds out the Kenyan contingent with HVAD, a pair of smart glasses that work offline to help visually impaired users navigate streets and identify people around them.
Elsewhere on the continent, Morocco’s BMTA&C Energy is developing a solar refrigeration system that pairs thermal storage with automated energy management, while Rwanda’s Kumva Insights has built an IoT-based Farm Smarter Platform that gives farmers and agribusinesses real-time visibility into environmental and operational conditions. From Uganda, Team CannaSave has designed a monitoring device to flag when a nasal cannula slips out of place during neonatal care — a low-cost intervention aimed at a high-stakes problem in newborn units. Zambia’s Yaaka Investment Limited is pursuing a different kind of infrastructure gap, with plans for an electronic-waste recycling plant. The eighth slot went to AISHA, an AI-powered voice assistant running on low-cost hardware to extend healthcare information to patients and frontline workers; the venture is headquartered in Pennsylvania but was grouped with the Africa-focused finalists.
What’s notable — and what’s missing
The lineup reinforces a pattern that has held across recent ISHOW cycles: East Africa, and Kenya in particular, continues to produce a disproportionate share of Africa’s hardware-led social ventures, helped by an ecosystem of maker spaces, engineering hubs and impact investors that has matured over several years. Nigeria, by contrast, has no representation in this year’s African finalist list — a reminder that the country’s startup strength remains concentrated in software, fintech and e-commerce rather than physical-product engineering, even as problems like cold-chain logistics and e-waste are just as acute at home.
For the finalists, the immediate prize is a share of ASME’s grant funding, design support and access to its international network of engineers — resources aimed less at flashy demos than at helping prototypes survive contact with real manufacturing and distribution constraints. The six ventures that ultimately make the global cohort, to be decided after the Chennai round, will spend the winter in ASME’s ISHOW Bootcamp, working through further design review ahead of commercial-scale plans. Results from the Africa and Americas legs are due at a virtual awards ceremony on August 11.
