2Africa, World’s Largest Internet Cable Lands in Mzansi
The largest fiber optic cable in the world, 2Africa, has arrived in Amanzimtoti, south of Durban.
The 45,000 km cable, which is still under construction, will follow the seafloors of the Mediterranean, Red, and Indian seas, as well as the Atlantic and Indian oceans.
The historic initiative, which will go into effect in May 2022, will offer fiber optic internet connections to 33 nations worldwide, including 19 in Africa.
The cable-laying ship was recently spotted off the shore of Amanzimtoti, which piqued the residents’ interest.
One of the South African landings for the cable was chosen: Amanzimtoti. The cable will travel 5 km underground from its beach landing location at Pipeline to a station being erected close to Arbour Road.
The cable is being laid by the global business 2Africa, which includes the telecom behemoths Facebook, MTN, Vodafone, China Mobile International, and Telecom Egypt.
