South African Telehealth Platform, Contro Raises R10.1 Million Pre-seed Round
The Plug & Play, iCubed Capital, WZ Capital, and the Jozi Angels Network participated in the pre-seed round of funding for the South African telehealth platform Contro.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation also provided grant funding from the i3 fund.
Contro was founded in June 2021 and presently provides six services, including once-off STI, thrush, and UTI treatments as well as subscription services for birth control, erectile dysfunction treatment, and hair loss treatment.
The business claims that so far, over 2000 people in South Africa have been treated thanks to its platform. The founder of Contro, Alex Schmid, commented on the fundraising round and claimed that they had created a service that essentially made access to medical care simpler, more affordable, and more discreet than ever before.
“I’m really proud of the effort put forward by our staff, the hours put in, and the weekends given up to get the business to where it is now. Investors have seen Contro’s tenacity and potential, which has proudly led to top venture capitalists, angel investors, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation supporting us and our platform,” he continued.
In order to facilitate targeted growth across South Africa, where 30% of its client base comes from townships and rural regions, Contro will use the funds to further enhance its platform, expand its offerings, as well as grow its personnel.
Our creation of a service that is available and reasonably priced for all South Africans is our greatest accomplishment to yet. The platform is used in both urban and rural locations, including Soweto, Khayelitsha, and Alexandra. We are one of the few businesses that can arrange for consultations and prescription delivery to any location in South Africa. This has humbled us as the South African founding team, and this accomplishment is what motivates us to keep building our platform and business to provide healthcare to everyone,” Schmid added.
