Google Releases Android Canary 2507: Experimental Linux GUI Apps & Enhanced Dark Mode for Pixels
Google stated earlier this month that the Android Developer Previews would be replaced by the Android Canary release channel. Only the second update, known as Android Canary 2507, is currently being released through the release channel. The tech giant claims that developers who wish to test the new Android APIs are the target audience. The most recent release is first available on Pixel phones, such as the premium Pixel 9 series and the more reasonably priced Pixel 9a.
Update for Android Canary 2507: Device Compatibility
Google said on a Reddit forum that the most recent version of Android Canary 2507 includes system images for the following Pixel devices along with an upgraded SDK (Software Development Kit):
Google Pixel 9 Series
Google Pixel 9a
Google Pixel 8 Series
Google Pixel Tablet
Google Pixel Fold
Google Pixel 7 Series
Google Pixel 6 Series
However, the company cautions against installing the update just yet. The Canary builds are “highly experimental” and are not advised for widespread use, according to Google. These versions include features that are still being developed and tested, therefore they are not yet stable and might have issues.
Even though the Android Canary releases were tested briefly with internal users, there may be some bugs that prevent your Pixel phone from functioning normally. We advise using a backup device rather than your primary phone if you still want to test out the experimental features.
New Features
The Android Authority has since reported that the Android Canary 2507 release supports graphical Linux applications. Android users can now boot up the Debian operating system in a virtual machine thanks to Google’s Linux Terminal app, which was released earlier this year. It is said to get graphical app support after installing the most recent Canary build.
The expansion of dark mode is another feature mentioned in the update. According to reports, a new Expanded option was found in the theme settings for the Pixel, forcing dark mode in apps that don’t support it natively. According to reports, the new feature is comparable to the Android Developer Options’ override force-dark option.
