Accelerating Africa’s Economic Growth via Women’s Innovative Action: A Recap of ABI’s International Women’s Day Event

The International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025 event, organized by Africa Blockchain Institute (ABI), brought together tech leaders, entrepreneurs, and aspiring professionals to explore the transformative role of women in blockchain and technology. Held at the ISSER Main Auditorium, University of Ghana, the event embraced the global IWD theme, “Accelerate Action,” emphasizing the power of innovation in driving economic growth and gender equity in Africa’s digital landscape.

Betty Enyonam Kumahor, a renowned innovation and entrepreneurship leader, delivered an inspiring keynote address that set the tone for the day. She highlighted the potential of blockchain to accelerate Africa’s economic growth, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among women in tech. She underscored how blockchain fosters trust and enhances economic systems while advocating for increased women’s representation in leadership as a means of driving gender inclusion. Her insights resonated deeply with attendees, encouraging them to take bold steps toward inclusion and innovation.
A panel discussion, moderated by Timileyin Arowosola, featured distinguished women in technology, including Paulette Watson MBE, founder of Academy Achievers; Erica Franklin, founder of EVF Consulting; and Jennifer Moffat, country manager at BudgIT. The conversation explored the gender gap in tech leadership, financial inclusion, and access to funding for women entrepreneurs. Panelists shared personal stories of resilience and strategies for scaling women-led innovations through mentorship and partnerships. The session was highly interactive, with attendees contributing to discussions and seeking practical advice from the panelists.

During the Q&A segment, participants raised thought-provoking questions about transitioning into the tech industry, navigating gender-based challenges, and the future role of blockchain and AI in creating opportunities for African women. The discussions provided attendees with valuable insights and actionable steps to thrive in the tech ecosystem.
The event welcomed professionals, students, and entrepreneurs who actively engaged in discussions and networking. Feedback from attendees highlighted the event’s impact, with 95 percent finding it insightful. Many expressed interest in mentorship programs and follow-up initiatives, while speakers and participants voiced enthusiasm for future collaborations.
