A Gemini AI-Powered Feature Is Coming to Google Translate That Could Compete with Duolingo

Two new important features are being added to Google Translate as part of an artificial intelligence (AI) update. Up until now, users of the Mountain View-based tech giant’s translation software have been able to copy and paste text and receive real-time translation in a wide range of languages. The internet giant is now utilizing its Gemini AI models to introduce two new features: a practice language function that allows users to learn new languages, similarly to Duolingo apps, and a live translate feature that aims to facilitate communication between two people speaking different languages.
Two New AI Features Are Coming to Google Translate
The internet giant described the two new features that will be available in India, Mexico, and the US on the Google Translate app for iOS and Android in a blog post. Communicating with individuals who speak various native languages is made possible by the first function, Live Translate.
Users will now see a new icon labeled “Live translate” at the bottom left of the screen after launching the Translate app. Users can configure the two languages on a new page that appears when they tap on it. The program then starts processing and transcribing spoken phrases into both the native and translated languages after they turn on the microphone.
A two-directional layout can be accessed by touching the message bubble icon located at the top of the screen. When two people are facing each other and still want to view the translation for a productive conversation, this is useful. According to Google, the tool recognizes accents, intonations, and conversational pauses using artificial intelligence.
The second feature transforms the Translate app’s functionality from a straightforward translation tool to a language coach. Users may now arrange customized speaking and listening practice sessions with Google’s new “practice” feature in the app. Depending on whether the user is a novice or an experienced speaker, these programs can be tailored. According to the post, “these interactive practices are created in real time and intelligently adjust to your skill level.”
Like Duolingo, the practice function lets users review a language by either practicing speaking with available tips or listening to a conversation and tapping the words they have heard to improve comprehension. According to Google, these sessions were created in consultation with learning specialists using the most recent research on language acquisition.
The first version of the service, which is now in beta, will let Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers practice English and English speakers practice Spanish and French.
