Changing how the world perceives Africa
As the center for the sharing of ideas about the continent and in the spirit of cooperation with people and organizations that share our values, The Africa Center stimulates interest, promotes ideas, and enables action about Africa’s worldwide influence on our shared destiny.
The Africa Center provides a gateway for engagement with contemporary Africa
The Africa Center is revolutionizing how people throughout the world view Africa, the Diaspora, and the place of individuals of African origin in society. As the center for the sharing of ideas about the continent and in the spirit of cooperation with people and organizations that share our values, The Africa Center stimulates interest, promotes ideas, and enables action about Africa’s worldwide influence on our shared destiny. Board Co-Chairs Chelsea Clinton and Jendayi Frazer, Board President Halima Aliko Dangote, and CEO Uzodinma Iweala form the leadership team that steers this objective.
In the center of New York City, the Africa Center’s physical position on Fifth Avenue at the confluence of the Museum Mile and Harlem captures the vibrancy and diversity of Africa and its Diaspora. In 2016, Caples Jefferson Architects (CJA) was hired to design the building in response to The Africa Center’s mission as an inclusive, experimental organization that promotes economic, policy, and cultural engagement on a local and international scale. The New York-based firm created a large, adaptable, and reactive structure to support the Center’s programming; its East Harlem Museum Mile location was contextualized both architecturally and thematically.
Thousands of people have already attended and participated in a number of initial performances, installations, talks, readings, book signings, and film screenings since The Africa Center began offering public programming in January 2019. Teranga, a fast-casual eatery on the first floor of the Center that specializes in continental cuisine and offers cooking classes and tastings that complement the Center’s programs and mission, has won praise from critics.
