Elon Musk’s xAI is reportedly planning to launch a ChatGPT-like standalone app soon.
According to reports, Elon Musk’s xAI is expected to release a stand-alone app as early as next month. Despite being a latecomer to the artificial intelligence (AI) area, xAI has made rapid progress in catching up. The AI company has apparently started testing a free version of the AI model, published a function-calling capability within its large language models (LLMs), and introduced an application programming interface (API) for developers in the past two months. Additionally, according to a rumor, the company intends to compete with OpenAI by developing an app similar to ChatGPT.
According to reports, Elon Musk’s xAI will have its own standalone app.
Musk wants to create Grok AI as a stand-alone product, according to the Wall Street Journal. According to the report, which cited persons with knowledge of the situation, xAI may soon release a stand-alone chatbot app for Grok that is comparable to ChatGPT.
Grok AI is now exclusively accessible to X Premium and Premium+ customers through X, formerly known as Twitter. According to a recent report, xAI intends to make the AI model available for free. The stand-alone app might be included in the same strategy.
The plans for a new app along with API for developers point towards Musk’s ambitions of creating new avenues of revenue generation through its AI offerings. Notably, to lure developers, the company even announced incentives in terms of free tokens. The plan seems to be about bringing Grok to as many people as possible and have other software and apps powered by its capabilities.
The WSJ report also claimed that Musk’s larger aim is to rival OpenAI and offer its products and services as a viable alternative in every space ChatGPT occupies. However, Grok lacks several features such as native image generation, voice support, and agentic AI capabilities, something major rivals such as Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and others are already offering.
Musk and OpenAI have a long-standing rivalry. Interestingly, earlier this year, Musk sued OpenAI for breaching its nonprofit contract. In response, the creator of ChatGPT referred to the accusations as “baseless and overreaching.”
The study also pointed out that xAI is superior to other AI chatbots in two important ways. Compared to previous LLMs, Grok can communicate in a more natural manner and has access to more recent information because it is trained solely on X’s public posts. Second, Musk is training the xAI algorithms on Tesla.
Only in the future will it be possible to determine whether these benefits result in user uptake and income production.
