60 Startups Join Google’s Black Founders Fund Cohort II
According to a Google for Firms Black Founders Fund (BFF) for Africa announcement, 60 qualified black-founded startups from across Africa have been chosen for the second cohort.
To enable them to expand their current work, the startups that join the program will receive a total of $4 million in investment and support.
Every one of the chosen companies will be given assistance in the form of a 6-month training program that includes access to a network of mentors to help them overcome difficulties that are particular to them. Additionally, they will participate in specialized workshops, support groups, and community-building activities.
Africa is a diverse continent with massive opportunity but the continent is faced with the challenge of limited diversity in venture capital funding flow. We hope that the Black Founders Fund program will be able to bridge the gap of disproportionate funding between expat startups over local and black-led companies.

Out of the 60 grantees, 50% are women-owned enterprises, and Botswana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda are among the nations that are represented.
A non-dilutive award of between $50,000 and $100,000 as well as up to $200,000 in Google Cloud credit will also be given to the 60 awardees.
Fintech, healthcare, e-commerce, logistics, agtech, education, hospitality, and smart cities were among the industries chosen.
With more than twenty-three grants, Nigeria tops the list of startups chosen for the program. With twelve grantees, Kenya comes in second, followed by Rwanda with six, South Africa with five, and Uganda with four. Senegal and Botswana each have one chosen startup, Cameroon and Ghana each have three chosen grantees, and Ethiopia has two chosen grantees.
About the Google Black Founders Fund for Africans
The Google for Startups program, which was launched in April 2012, has led to the creation of nearly 4,600 new employment and more than $290 million in funding.
In order to level the playing field as they create better products and services that boost the African economy, the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund program will introduce grantees in Africa to Google’s tools, relationships, and best practices.
The CEO, MyMedicines, and BFF program graduates from 2021. Abimbola Adebakin expressed his hope that the money would help African companies compete on an even playing field and close infrastructure and product delivery bottlenecks in the continent.
Programs like the Black Founders Fund enhance the African ecosystem – where we currently have gaps in funding and infrastructure. Remember from last year when we revealed that 26 Nigerian digital startups received funding from Google’s Black Founders Fund, accounting for more than half of the 50 participants.

Google’s implementation partner, CcHUB, will disperse funding for the Google for Startup Black Founders Fund.
