Google to Discontinue Hangouts Come November
Hangouts hasn’t been utilized in more than three years. Although the platform was launched in 2013, its last ceremony will take place in November 2022.
The first group affected are those who utilize Hangouts on their mobile device. They’ll undoubtedly begin seeing in-app reminders urging them to use Google Chat rather than Gmail, both through the app and through Gmail.
The Google Chat extension will offer the same incentives to Chrome Hangouts users to switch over. Hangouts on Gmail Web will be replaced with Chat starting in July.
Google said that even while it strongly advises everyone to switch to Chat as soon as possible, Hangouts Web will remain available and functional until next November. One month prior to the switch from Hangouts Web to Web Chat, the most current alerts will be delivered.
According to Google, in principle, all conversations will be transferred instantly from Hangouts to Chat. To be safe, you should upload your data prior to November. But if customers are adamant about keeping a backup of their Hangouts data, he suggests downloading them through Google Takeout before the deadline in November.
Google offers numerous arguments to convince you to agree to this largely imposed change. The company claims that Google Chat offers a more modern experience and is integrated with Google Workspace.
The company also states that it has “huge objectives for the future of Chat” and that it will soon be releasing new features. The maker already believes that Chat offers “greater ways to interact and converse” than Hangouts and is more engaging and feature-rich.
