Apple TV+ market share increases in the US while Netflix is behind its competitors
Apple has been investing heavily in Apple TV+, its own streaming platform that features original movies and TV shows.
While Apple TV+ market share increased in 2021, the platform remains well behind its competitors in the United States, with only a 5% market share.
According to a JustWatch data obtained by 9to5Mac, Apple TV+ market share increased by 1% in the United States during Q4 2021. While Apple’s streaming service has more members than Paramount+ (previously known as CBS All Access), the distance between it and competitors such as HBO Max and Disney+ is enormous.
In comparison, HBO Max has a 12% market share in the United States, while Hulu and Disney+ (both owned by Disney) each have a 13% market share. Amazon Prime Video ranks in second place with a 19% market share. Unsurprisingly, Netflix maintains top place with 25% of the market, despite a 2% dip in members from the previous quarter.
According to JustWatch, Apple TV+ rose by 2% in 2021, a new high for the platform. At the same time, as additional streaming services are introduced each year, both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have been losing ground to their competitors. HBO Max was the fastest growing platform in the United States in 2021, with a 5% rise in market share.
In 2021, the SVOD market saw extreme growth in competition. Apple TV+ ended the year on its highest market share to date, and added 2% throughout the year. Netflix and Prime Video continually lost market share as other platforms such as HBO Max, Paramount+, and Discovery+ gained momentum. Adding +5%, HBO Max had the most successful year in 2021.
Apple has been investing in iconic franchises in order to increase the appeal of its streaming platform to customers. In addition to creating a show based on Isaac Asimov’s award-winning science fiction novel series Foundation, the corporation just ordered a live-action series of Godzilla and Titans.
It’s worth noting that Apple TV+ debuted in November 2019 and now costs $4.99 a month in the United States.
