Why Curiosity, Not Age, Decides How Well You Adapt to New Technology
For retirees, grandparents, and older adults easing back into work or community life, the hardest part of ageing often isn’t the years themselves — it’s the pressure to keep up with a world that updates faster than habits can. A missed app update, an unfamiliar interface, a grandchild’s exasperated “just tap here” can all chip away at confidence that took decades to build. Research on ageing and cognition suggests the fix isn’t willpower or memory drills. It’s mindset.
The Case for Treating Ability as a Skill, Not a Verdict
Psychologist Carol Dweck’s growth mindset theory — the idea that abilities can be built rather than fixed at birth — has mostly been studied in children and students. But a small, growing body of research is testing whether it holds up in later life, and the early signal is that it does. A multi-skill learning intervention with older adults found that participants who took part in weekly discussions on growth mindset and successful ageing saw measurable increases in their growth mindset scores over three months, and those who started with a stronger growth mindset showed larger gains in cognitive testing by the end of the program, according to a study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience.
The effect isn’t confined to cognition. A two-year longitudinal study tracking adults aged 19 to 89 through the COVID-19 pandemic found that a growth mindset was associated with lower depression and higher well-being once other factors were accounted for — and the pattern largely held when researchers isolated the results for older adults specifically, according to findings published in PLOS Mental Health. Separately, a study of 100 healthy older adults found a significant link between a growth mindset and willingness to stick with healthy behaviours, suggesting the belief that you can change shapes whether you actually try, according to research in Activities, Adaptation & Aging.
Clinically, the pattern shows up in digital health too. A randomised controlled trial in China found that a 12-week growth mindset intervention improved older patients’ willingness to adopt eHealth tools, prompting researchers to describe growth mindset as a potential lever for narrowing the “digital divide” that keeps many older adults offline, per a trial published in JMIR Human Factors.
Where the Digital Divide Actually Bites
That divide is well documented. Older adults’ digital literacy runs roughly 40% behind that of younger users on OECD measures, and the gap widens further along income lines — households in the bottom income bracket report proficiency rates around a third of those in the top bracket, according to 2026 digital literacy data compiled by Gitnux. Among homebound older adults specifically, US survey data from 2022 showed significantly lower rates of cellphone ownership and internet use compared with non-homebound peers, according to a study using National Health and Aging Trends data. Digital literacy isn’t just a convenience gap, either — a 2025 study using longitudinal data from China found it had measurable knock-on effects on older adults’ physical and mental health, largely through stronger social support and healthier daily routines, according to research in Frontiers in Public Health.
None of this means the answer is a crash course in every new app at once. The research points the other way: small, repeated exposure beats intensity. The Chinese eHealth trial ran weekly sessions of just 25 to 45 minutes, and the multi-skill study built its gains over a slow, three-month arc rather than a single push. What both interventions share is structure — a recurring, low-stakes reason to practise.
What That Looks Like Day to Day
Practically, this suggests a short list of habits rather than a course syllabus: picking one new task to rehearse each week — a video call, a photo share, setting a reminder — until it stops feeling foreign; asking a single “how does this work” question a day and noting the answer in one line, which trains attention toward learning opportunities rather than around them; and explaining something newly learned to a friend or grandchild, since teaching back a skill tends to cement it faster than repeating it alone. None of these require new hardware or a formal class. They require repetition, and repetition is what turns an unfamiliar interface into a boring, forgettable one — which, for confidence, is exactly the point.
The broader implication for anyone working in ageing, health tech, or digital inclusion is that closing the digital divide for older adults may depend less on simplifying interfaces and more on designing for gradual, low-pressure repetition — the same principle the research keeps returning to, whether the outcome being measured is cognitive score, depression, or willingness to open a health app.
