WhatsApp Will Soon Release a Feature to Allow Users to Set Expiration Date for Group Chats, Save Storage
WhatsApp has been seen working on a feature that would allow users to regain valuable smartphone storage space.
The instant messaging service is developing a function that will let users specify a time limit for group talks. This future feature is mentioned in the most recent beta of WhatsApp for iOS, but the Meta-owned messaging platform has not yet made any formal announcements regarding when it will go live.
Users will be able to set a date for their group to expire thanks to the “Expiring Groups” functionality. According to a tip by feature tracker WABetaInfo, users can choose to deactivate the group within a day, a week, or even specify a custom date for it to become inactive.
A group chat’s settings area is shown to include a new Expiring Groups setting that will allow users to choose from the three choices stated above in a screenshot of the feature provided by WABetaInfo. The group’s previously set expiration date will be disabled by the fourth option, Remove expiration date.
On the day of expiration, WhatsApp will remind the user to clean up the group, as shown in the screenshot. This means that, unlike disappearing chats, the feature will not be an automatic procedure. Others in the WhatsApp group may not be impacted by the decision to give the group an end date.
Each group conversation on the Meta-owned messaging service can have up to 1,024 participants. A user’s available storage can be quickly used by a number of messages and attachments shared in a group.
By frequently deleting group chats, WhatsApp’s “Expiring Groups” feature, which is anticipated to appear in both the Android and iOS versions of the program, may help users better manage their phone’s storage.
According to the feature tracker, WhatsApp will remind users to download any crucial information from the group chats and subsequently delete the conversation once a specified group chat expiration date has passed.
The most recent beta releases of WhatsApp for iOS and Android do not currently have this feature accessible for beta users to test. WhatsApp has not yet specified when it will make the feature available to all users.
Also, the platform is working on features like the ability to block unknown callers and sign up for a WhatsApp newsletter.
