Twitter will combine shopping and livestreaming and will collaborate with Walmart to test a new feature
Twitter and Walmart are collaborating to launch an online shopping initiative via livestreams. The latest feature will allow users to make purchases from businesses directly on the microblogging platform while simultaneously watching a live broadcast.
On November 28, the company will conduct its first live shopping stream test. Jason Derulo, a well-known R&B artist, will host the show.
Electronics, home goods, apparel, seasonal decor, surprise special guests, and much more will be available for purchase during the Live Shopping event. Twitter Shopping Manager is also being tested by the social networking company.
Twitter announced the new live shopping experience in a blog post on November 22. On November 28, Twitter and Walmart will kick off Cyber Week with the first ever shoppable livestream on Twitter. At 7 p.m. ET, the Cyber Deals Sunday event will begin (5:30am IST). Users can watch the live broadcast and shop Walmart products during the event (on iOS and desktop). Derulo will take the stage for a 30-minute variety show.
People watching a Live Shopping stream on Twitter can look at the Shoppable Banner and Shop Tab on the page of the live event. They can also watch the livestream on the merchant’s website through an in-app browser, without having to pause the show while shopping.
“Livestreaming on Twitter gives businesses the ability to engage with their most influential fans, and incorporating the ability to shop into this experience is a natural extension of attracting and engaging with receptive audiences,” Twitter said of the feature.
Twitter has also begun testing a Twitter Shopping Manager to help merchants with onboarding and product catalog management. According to the company, this will provide merchants with a one-stop shop for managing how they appear on Twitter. Twitter stated that it is looking forward to introducing more products to make Twitter shopping a new experience.
Twitter’s foray into livestream shopping is the result of a feature called Shop Module. People can shop for products using an in-app browser, which was introduced in July of this year. The Shop Module is a dedicated area at the top of a profile where businesses can display their products.
Twitter users with the Shop Module enabled can visit such profiles and scroll through the product carousel. They can tap on a product that piques their interest to view similar products in an in-app browser without leaving Twitter.
