This morning I read from CommunicationsWeeek that a Nigerian Team of cyber security professionals “TeamNaija” has been crowned African champions at the just concluded Global Cyberlympics held in Washington DC, USA.
Global Cyberlympics is a hands on cyber security team game sport that brings together the best ethical hackers from around the world to compete in a series of Forensics, Penetration testing, Computer Network Defense, and Capture the Flag Challenges.
Global CyberLympics’ goal is to raise awareness towards increased education and ethics in information security through a series of cyber competitions that encompass forensics, ethical hacking and defense.
One key initiative for Global CyberLympics is to foster an environment that creates child online protection through education. The mission statement of the Global CyberLympics is “Unifying Global Cyber Defense through the Games.”
Oluseyi Akindeinde, team leader and chief technical officer, Digital Encode, who was elated at the feet his team achieved, stated that: “This is the second time in three years that we will be the champions of Africa. The team put in a lot of hard work and it has clearly paid off. This has been a joint effort and I am glad to be a part of this team.
He however stressed the need for the country to take cybersecurity issues seriously. “We need to start taking cybersecurity very seriously in Nigeria as attention is shifting globally to the Internet and it’s inherent security vulnerabilities.
There need to be a dedicated national cyber security strategy and roadmap to secure Nigeria’s cyberspace. We call on all involved to take a look at the implications of cyber security and find a lasting solution to it,” he added.
The team is made up of Adewale Obadare (Digital Encode), Uchenna Akajiuba (FirstBank), David Abolusoro (FirstBank), Bimbo Jaiyeola (Union bank), Rotimi Akinyele and the team leader Oluseyi Akindeinde (Digital Encode).
Before reaching this stage the teams emerged the best in Africa which enabled them to represent Africa at the global cyberlympics where they were formally crowned the champions of Africa as result of their creditable performance at the event.
TeamNaija had competed and won the Africa Regional Championship in 2012 and represented the continent at the world Finals in Miami where they had a very good outing.
Digital Encode has since then built the first privately owned Cyber security Operations Center where the team had built up capacity over the years to world standard with the ability to match the skills of the best in the field.
Digital Encode is a purely a Nigerian Information Security consulting outfit that specializes in providing world class Cyber security, Governance, Risk and Compliance consulting services to organizations.
