Meet TotalEnergies, the Proud Sponsor of the 2023 Nigeria Innovation Experience Talks (NiX Talks)
The Nigeria Innovation Summit 2023 which was held on October 6th, 2023 with the theme, “Innovating for the Future”, received huge support from TotalEnergies, who powered the Nigeria Innovation Experience Talks (NiX Talks).
The NiX Talks celebrate local ingenuity and innovators building key solutions to address very nuanced local challenges away from the stereotypical narratives about Nigeria and Africa.
TotalEnergies is a multi-energy company that is committed to better energy that is more affordable, more reliable, cleaner, and accessible to as many people as possible. No wonder, the company was the proud sponsor of the Nigeria Innovations Experience Talks (NiX Talks), which focused on “Green, Clean Tech, and the Future of Energy.”
During the NiX Talks, Mr. Omotayo Hassan, Renewable Explorer, TotalEnergies delivered a presentation on the NiX Talks’ theme, “Green, Clean Tech, and the Future of Energy”. He used the time to share some of TotalEnergies’ success stories in cleantech.
Mr. Omotayo Hassan, Renewable Explorer, TotalEnergies
According to him, “As energy is reinventing itself, so is TotalEnergies, whose purpose is to supply more affordable, more available, and cleaner energy to as many people as possible.” Mr. Haasan added that TotalEnergies is a major player in the energy transition from oil to natural gas to renewable energies to biomass, among others.
“To accelerate the pace of TotalEnergies’ efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, the company is mobilizing the pioneering spirit of our multi-energy company and the pioneering spirit of innovative ventures that are leaders in their field.”
Below are some of the company’s actions to transform and reinforce its ambition to be a world-class player in the energy transition and to get to net zero in 2050:
- TotalEnergies identifies, develops, and deploys cutting-edge, innovative solutions in all their forms, to provide a more safe, more affordable, more clean and more accessible energy to the greatest number of people.
- TotalEnergies is one of the top 5 renewable energy producers, and it has constantly accelerated its pace of growth.
- As of July 28, 2022, the company has 25 % of TotalEnergies’ CAPEX dedicated to renewables & electricity; > 11.5 GW installed’ > 5 GW under construction; 6.8 TWh (net) generated in 2021; 2,700TotalEnergies stations solarized worldwide; and >$3 bn/yr net investment in renewables and electricity
- In Nigeria projects, TotalEnergies, TotalEnergies Marketing completed the Rite Foods (Food & Beverage Company) solar ground mount project in 2020 with 15 years Power Purchase Agreement. In 2021, Rite Foods has committed to an extra solar capacity of 3MWp with 2,538 Photovoltaic solar panels; 1MWp Capacity; >1.2 GWh Electricity produced annually; 4% of electricity needs covered; 736 tons Reduction of CO2eq per year, and more.
- To achieve carbon neutrality, TotalEnergies is already carving out a position in this future energy supply and diversifying its energy mix accordingly, reducing the share of its petroleum products and increasing natural gas, as a transition fuel, and renewable electricity.
- One of the drivers identified to achieve this shift is an increase in the share of renewable energies, particularly through the development of biofuels. The energy mix of TotalEnergies sales will shift significantly, and could stand at 50% gas, 30% petroleum products, 15% majority-renewable electricity, and 5% biomass and hydrogen by 2030. The shift in the mix towards lower-carbon products will allow us to reduce the lifecycle carbon intensity of energy products sold by at least 20% by 2030.
- As a pioneer in biofuels for more than 20 years as well as a bioplastics producer, TotalEnergieshas a role in the future of the bioenergies sector and the development of all biomass conversion pathways.
- TotalEnergies is reducing the supply of all fossil fuels byfirst developing capacity for low-carbon alternatives. It is aimed at drastically reducing the world’s use of fossil fuels to curb global warming. Also offering interesting prospects for reducing the environmental footprint is the development of bioplastics.
The Summit in its 8th year was successfully concluded with the participation of delegates from government agencies, diplomats, academic communities and research institutes, international organisations, investors, entrepreneurs, business/thought leaders, innovators, startups, students and stakeholders across the globe, who were part of the hybrid event.
NIS is an annual event that brings together stakeholders from different sectors of Nigeria’s economy, governments, investors, policymakers, and players in the tech and innovation ecosystem to discuss ground-breaking ideas, trends, and opportunities to innovate solutions that solve unique challenges within Nigeria, and the African continent at large.
Apart from the NiXTalks, other highlights of the Summit were fireside chats, panel discussions/interactive sessions, VR Games, innovation showcases and exhibitions, and expert insights on emerging technologies and their applications in solving local problems.
