Kenyan electric vehicle company Opibus evolves to ROAM
The Kenyan electric vehicle company Opibus has rebranded as ROAM, following a strategic shift in the company’s vision as a result of its expansion.
Opibus, which was founded in 2017, is the leading provider of locally designed and manufactured electric vehicles. Its vision is to develop dependable and cost-effective products for the pan-African mass market.
Late last year, the company raised US$7.5 million in equity and grant funding to help it scale its operations, and in January, it introduced Kenya’s first all-electric bus – also the first electric bus designed in Africa.
It has now changed its name to ROAM, claiming that the new name better reflects “the values the company stands for.” The new name is intended to reflect the company’s ambition to electrify Africa’s transportation sector, as well as its broader goal of delivering disruptive technologies that are optimized for local use cases across the continent.
“This is more than just a name change; it is a significant step toward realizing our ambition as leaders in providing electric mobility solutions and energy systems to the African region.” It’s exciting to see how far we’ve come and how far we can go in Africa, and it’s even more exciting to see the endless possibilities,” said Filip Lövström, CEO of ROAM.
