Ibom Blockchain Xperience Makes History as Crypto Is Used to Buy Tomatoes and Pepper at Akwa Ibom Market
The Ibom Blockchain Xperience (IBX) has recorded a historic milestone in Africa’s blockchain adoption journey with a live demonstration of cryptocurrency being used to purchase everyday food items, tomatoes and pepper at Anua Market, one of Akwa Ibom State’s major local markets.
The activation, which took place on December 13, 2025, marks one of the first documented demonstrations in Nigeria where blockchain technology is applied directly to grassroots commerce in a traditional open-market setting.
The exercise was led by the President of Ibom Blockchain Xperience, Orok Godspower, as part of a local market crypto education initiative under the ongoing IBX Tour. The activity forms a core component of the tour’s grassroots engagement strategy, designed to introduce blockchain technology in a simple, practical, and accessible manner.
During the activation, local traders at Anua Market received crypto payments for produce, with on-the-spot guidance provided to ensure understanding, consent, and ease of use. The demonstration highlighted how blockchain-based payments can support small-scale commerce, reduce friction, and expand access to digital financial tools for everyday people.
