Google Rolls out 30,000 Scholarships for African Developers
For aspiring and professional developers in Africa, Google has announced 30,000 Android and Google Cloud training scholarships. The goal of the program is to boost the number of developers on the continent.
“Software development opportunities in Africa are at an all-time high. For over ten years, Google has supported African developers through community and training initiatives,” said Africa Developer Training Program Manager John Kimani.
According to Kimani, there are more than 180 active developer communities in 30 African nations that allow developers to interact, learn, and grow together.
In 2021, 10000 Google Developer scholarships were distributed across Africa to novices and 5,000 to seasoned developers, according to Techweez, across Android and mobile web development tracks.
Successful applicants will be allocated to peer learning groups and will be mentored throughout their trip.
They’ll also get curated content on Android app development using Kotlin and Google Cloud, which will help students prepare for Associate engineer certification.
According to Techweez, the Google and Accenture 2021 Africa Developer Report highlights that the expanding startup ecosystem and global demand for remote work are driving prospects for software developers in Africa.
Last month, the digital behemoth announced the opening of a tech hub in Kenya as part of its five-year plan to invest $1 billion in Africa.
Google will collaborate with Andela and Pluralsight on this project. Andela is a global job placement network for software engineers that focuses on long-term engagements, access to international positions, competitive salary, and career counseling for programmers. Pluralsight, on the other hand, is an American privately held online education firm that provides software engineers, IT administrators, and creative professionals with a variety of video training courses via its website.
Africans interested in applying for the position can do so on the Pluralsight website by the end of the month (31 May 2022).
