Google launches AI Max globally, targeting African businesses.

An AI-powered update to its Search Ads platform, AI Max for Search Campaigns, has begun a global beta deployment by Google with the goal of giving companies a competitive advantage in the digital market.
Businesses may engage with potential consumers more successfully by using AI Max’s artificial intelligence to help them appear in more relevant search results, especially when those customers use unusual or non-traditional search phrases.
Google specifically stated that in a competitive and rapidly evolving market, this might be a game-changer for African companies attempting to attract internet audiences.
“Local businesses need smarter tools to stand out as more people throughout Africa rely on Search to make everyday decisions, from finding a tailor in Yaba to comparing prices for solar panels in Nairobi,” said Brian Burdick, Senior Director of Search at Google.
Features of AI Max
AI Max goes beyond basic keyword matching by utilizing Google’s most sophisticated AI models, such as the Gemini suite.
A Kumasi bag vendor, for instance, might suddenly appear in searches for “durable weekend carryall” even if the ad copy doesn’t contain those exact terms. This is an increase in visibility that would not be achievable with conventional keyword targeting.
Key features of AI Max include:
- Search term matching: Automatically identifies and targets high-potential search queries.
- Dynamic text customization: Adjusts ad copy in real-time to better align with what users are searching for.
- Final URL expansion: Sends users to the most relevant landing page on a business’s site.
- Advanced controls: Gives advertisers more control over brand safety, location targeting, and audience reach.
Targeted African business
According to Google, the new tools can assist African business owners in running more effective, focused campaigns. Many of these owners manage their businesses with little resources and time.
Early adopters have reported an average 14% boost in conversions at a comparable cost-per-action, while those who previously used simple keyword techniques have had even greater results, the company claims.
It further stated that AI Max is a setting within already-existing Search advertising rather than a brand-new campaign category. Because of this, companies may easily implement the feature without having to completely redo their ad setup.
“We know many African entrepreneurs wear multiple hats. AI Max is built to reduce their workload, not add to it,” Burdick added.
What you should know
The launch of Google AI Max comes amid intense competition in the AI space vendors in the U.S. and China continue to improve their generative AI models in a close race to grab enterprise attention.
Within the space of one week in March this year, OpenAI, Google and DeepSeek introduced new updates to their AI models.
- First, Chinese AI startup DeepSeek released an upgrade to its V3 model Monday. The new DeepSeek-V3-0324 launched on Hugging Face and includes improvements in reasoning and coding capabilities.
- Hours after DeepSeek’s release, OpenAI launched its latest image-generating model within GPT-4o. The model can accurately render text and follow prompts precisely to generate images.
- Following OpenAI’s release, Google launched Gemini 2.5, a “thinking model” designed to tackle more complex problems than previous models could.
