GEC+Africa Opens Regional Pitch Competitions to Pre-Seed and Seed Startups Across the Continent
The Global Entrepreneurship Congress Africa (GEC+Africa) has launched a multi-country pitch competition targeting early-stage technology startups and post-revenue micro, small, and medium enterprises across the continent.
The initiative will bring together ventures from multiple African nations through a three-tiered selection process, beginning with national bootcamps and culminating in a final pitching stage at the main GEC+Africa event in Cape Town this September.
Applications are open to technology startups operating at pre-seed or seed stage that have developed at least a minimum viable product. MSMEs must demonstrate they have already generated revenue. Selected applicants will participate in preparation bootcamps before competing in their respective countries.
Three-Stage Competition Structure
Countries hosting preliminary events will each select one winner from their local competitions. From this pool, GEC+Africa adjudicators will identify ten finalists who will receive sponsored trips to attend the main congress in Cape Town, South Africa. A panel comprising ecosystem players from across Africa will evaluate the final presentations and select the top three winners.
The competition draws participation from entrepreneurs in Botswana, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda, and Zambia, with coordination handled by Global Entrepreneurship Network chapters in each country.
Assessment Framework
Judges will evaluate presentations based on six criteria: problem identification and market sizing, competitive differentiation, business model viability, team capability, MVP effectiveness, and overall pitch quality.
Applicants must submit detailed pitch decks addressing their value proposition, financial projections, investment thesis, and team composition. The deck should demonstrate clear market opportunity, sustainable business strategy, and potential for growth and scale.
Cape Town as Innovation Hub
The competition feeds into GEC+Africa 2026, scheduled for September 16-17 in Cape Town. According to the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2024, Cape Town ranks among the top 100 emerging ecosystems globally, with an estimated ecosystem value of $3 billion.
The city hosts nearly 60 percent of South Africa’s startups and serves as headquarters for 22 On Sloane, Africa’s largest startup campus. Since its Johannesburg launch in 2017, 22 On Sloane has supported over 1,156 entrepreneurs who have collectively created more than 2,200 jobs.
The 2024 edition of GEC+Africa drew over 2,000 delegates from 43 African nations and resulted in a government commitment to support the creation of one million new businesses by 2030.
Interested startups and MSMEs can submit applications through the official GEC+Africa platform, with 22 On Sloane managing digital marketing for all lead-up activities across participating countries.
