FINCA Ventures Opens Applications for Third Annual $100,000 Prize Competition Targeting African Startups
FINCA Ventures, the impact investing arm of FINCA International, is accepting applications for its 2026 Prize Competition — a grant competition that awards up to $100,000 to early-stage African entrepreneurs working in financial inclusion and sustainable agriculture.
Applications must be submitted through the FINCA Ventures portal before midnight on April 10, 2026 (GMT-4).
What the Competition Offers
The competition is structured as a “shark tank”-style event, with three finalists per category selected to pitch before a panel of judges at an awards ceremony and reception scheduled for October 6 in San Francisco. Travel costs for invited finalists will be covered by FINCA.
Grant awards of up to $100,000 are available in each category, distributed across first, second, and third place. Beyond the cash prize, FINCA Ventures will work with finalists to identify areas for technical assistance and organise both in-person and online workshops aligned with their business needs.
Two Categories, Two Priorities
Eligible companies must choose between two tracks. The first targets fintech: the competition is looking for companies using mobile-first or digital-first solutions to expand access to financial resources for underserved populations, with emphasis on financial literacy, productivity, and technology-enabled services.
The second track covers agriculture: the competition seeks entrepreneurs scaling solutions that strengthen agrifood value chains and improve outcomes for farmers and the environment.
This year, FINCA has also partnered with the ClimateShot Investor Coalition (CLIC) on the agriculture track, offering agri-SMEs that integrate climate- and nature-positive practices the additional opportunity to pitch at the CLIC-AFSF Climate & Nature deal room at the Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali in September 2026.
Eligibility
Eligible companies must have at least one African founder, be for-profit, post-revenue, and operational for no more than five years, with active operations in Sub-Saharan Africa. Nigeria is among the eligible countries.
FINCA Ventures is an impact investing initiative of FINCA International, which draws on over 35 years of experience in global microfinance. Since 2018, the venture arm has invested in 32 companies across agriculture, financial inclusion, health, and education.
The inaugural competition was held in March 2024 in Washington, D.C., bringing together more than 150 leaders across impact, technology, government, and investment. That event resulted in $400,000 in grants distributed to 12 social enterprises working across healthcare and agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. The 2026 edition is the third iteration of the programme.
Application is open till April 10 and can be accessed through the official website.
