Crypto Firm, Binance Appoints Hannes Wessels as the New Leader for its South African Business
Hannes Wessels has been named as Binance’s Country Head for South Africa. Binance is one of the top global providers of blockchain and cryptocurrency infrastructure.
The company claims that the new hire will advance its goals of expanding its business operations in the area. According to Finder, South Africa’s adoption rate for cryptocurrencies and the blockchain sector is typically less than 10%. However, interest in the technology is still rising, and regional blockchain education initiatives are being spearheaded by global industry heavyweights like Binance and Yellow Card.
Wessels, who was formerly the Head of Global Banking for South Africa at HSBC, joins the team with more than ten years of expertise in the financial industry.
He is anticipated to oversee the formulation of business plans and direct strategic projects for Binance in South Africa.
When asked about his new position, Wessels said, “I am thrilled to join Binance at a time when South Africa’s acceptance of cryptocurrencies is still in its infancy and look forward to playing a major role in Binance’s growth plan in South Africa.
Wessels oversaw HSBC’s corporate and investment banking operations in the nation before joining Binance. This included the payments and cash management industry, which was recognized as South Africa’s top payments firm by Euromoney in 2021.
He was the chairman of the bank’s employment equity committee and a member of the executive committee in South Africa. The worldwide division of HSBC expanded to become one of the top three firms in the nation during this time.
Wessels will now contribute his prior expertise from working at conventional financial institutions to this expanding sector.
