Amazon’s Alexa.com Website Ranking Service Will Cease Operation in May 2022
Amazon has announced the closure of Alexa.com, its website ranking tool that has been in operation for the past 25 years. The service, which offered a paid subscription with SEO research and analysis tools, will discontinue providing website statistics and rankings next year.
According to Amazon, after Alexa Internet is decommissioned, the service’s API will be turned off in December 2022. Before the service is discontinued, Amazon will allow users to export their Alexa data.
On a support page, the company announced its decision to shut down the Web ranking service Alexa.com by May 2022, as first spotted by Bleeping Computer. “We’ve made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022, after two decades of helping you find, reach, and convert your digital audience,” the company stated on its support page. Alexa Internet is no longer accepting new subscriptions as of December 8, but existing customers will continue to have access until the service is discontinued.
Alexa Internet was launched by Amazon in April 1996, and its most popular metric is the Alexa Traffic Rank (or Global Rank), which provides users with an estimate of a website’s popularity. Customers will be able to export their data and delete their Alexa.com account ahead of the shutdown. Meanwhile, Bleeping Computer reports that the APIs for the service will be decommissioned in December 2022.
While the company did not provide a reason for the shutdown, the report cites data from traffic and marketing analytics firm Semrush that shows the service’s own traffic has been steadily declining over the years. At the time of publication, Alexa Internet’s Facebook and Twitter accounts had not yet been updated to announce the impending shutdown.
